Michael Heath describes his inspiration and the writing process of this novel – 

For this third book in the series, the characters move into 1937 when what would become known as ‘The gathering storm’ was emerging in Europe and everyone felt that war would be inevitable. So I needed to set this story against that burgeoning threat but to keep it as a detective mystery and not a war story in itself. It begins in the theatre land of the West End and moves to the Essex countryside and coast before the core of the story is revealed – and I won’t spoil the plot by revealing where it then leads. I did a good deal of research into the ‘occult’ aspects of the tale and I hope readers will find them intriguing as well as entertaining as the story then takes a surprise twist and confronts the harsh realities of that time.
