THE LINGUIST

An ‘edge of your seat’ thriller with a plot that constantly twists and turns and keeps the reader guessing until the very final page.

In Switzerland, a British tourist dies violently on the ski slopes.
In Russia, a top scientist conducts cutting-edge research under the scrutiny of the state police.
In France, a world-weary detective hunts Islamist terrorists bombing the streets of Paris.
In England, the Special Intelligence Service secretly monitors an international conference of The United Nations World Food Programme.
As these apparently unrelated threads converge, the fly trapped in the web is Adam Russell, a British Government interpreter whose car collides with another driven by Russian journalist Nina Petrova. The consequences of that collision penetrate the highest ranks of British Intelligence and transform Russell’s life for ever.

Michael Heath describes his inspiration and the writing process of this novel –

All my novels are written with the intention of creating something I myself would enjoy reading – and so my intention was to create a plot that constantly wrong-foots the reader and weaves a devious path until the final resolution. I am also concerned with the power of the state and the way in which the ‘need to know’ principle – which is used to keep national secrets safe – is so vulnerable to abuse and can be used to cover bad actions. The possibilities this offers to a writer provided me with the inspiration for The Linguist.
